[Work Description]

Perceptions is a poetry collection that challenges many of our attitudes and values, showing us many of our concerns that grow more troubled in these difficult times. Disasters of our time come into immediate focus as they occur. We are shown again and again the catastrophic events of the day. It is the lingering effects that are seen from different viewpoints, and produce a sometimes volatile perception of our world. Gary Beck's ability to capture events seen from unusual angles is on shining display in this brilliant new collection.

Gauguin's Ghost Story

Tony Stowers
[Kindle Format]
[Work Description]

On 8th May 1903, French post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin died in a bamboo hut on a tiny volcanic island called Hiva Oa in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Or did he? Gauguin spent his last few days with a witch doctor called Tioka who blessed Gauguin with a protective "spell" but what sort of spell was it? On 3rd January 2008, Tony Stowers who trained at Central School of Speech and Drama, travelled to Pont-Aven, spiritual home of Impressionists in Brittany, France. His plan: to perform his one-man show "Gauguin’s Ghost". At an exhibition in Pont-Aven, Gauguin’s spirit again visits the Breton port and transfers into Stowers’ head. Through alternating first-person conversation techniques, they size each other up with garnish of wit and sarcasm. Slowly their fragile friendship strengthens and together they go about creating the show.

Gary Beck
Rogue Scholars Press
ISBN: 978-0-9840982-0-0
[Work Description]

Expectations is a passionate exploration of people struggling to cope with a difficult, demanding life. Using a diversity of styles, Beck depicts the human condition in the challenging urban environment, as well as various other settings. There is a constant undercurrent of striving for more than we're given, or can accomplish. Yet the anguish of disappointed expectations pervades the extravagant hopes and simple day to day desires of individuals who aspired to something better. Several long poems push the envelop of individual experience in differing formats, from the lyric to harsh threnodic rhythms.
